The Homelands Collection, 3rd Edition Preview

This preview page shows a portion of the works in The Homelands Collection, 3rd Ed.  Exhibition opening at the gallery on May 11 will include the collection in its entirety.

The third year of The Homelands Collection expands the concept of Indigenous artists from across North America creating ledger-style, narrative artwork on antique maps to include a body of work representing Indigenous artists from across the Earth.

Artists from North America are joined by those from Peru, Nepal, Eswatini (formerly Swaziland), Northern Scandinavia, and the Torres Strait of Australia.

Formally designating this year’s collection as Decolonizing the Map is a bit of a misnomer as the previous two editions had this very concept at their foundation. Using the title this year better illuminates how we brought together people world-wide in a singularly focused art exhibition. To our knowledge, a project of this nature has never been attempted.

This year’s edition will offer 88 works from 28 artists. Due to institutional purchases from the 1st and 2nd editions—Harvard University, The Newberry Library, University of Southern Maine (Osher Map Library and Cartographic Center)—along with a feature, interview article about the 3rd edition that Native American Art Magazine has in their current April/ May issue, we have high hopes this year’s release will be as well received as the previous two.

After the private, collectors-only first showing on Thursday, May 11, the 3rd edition will be on display in the gallery May 12th to June 1st. The collection will be available on-line and at the Gallery for purchase beginning at 12 Noon, Friday, May 12. We kindly ask that purchased pieces remain until the end of the exhibition, June 1.
