Frog Canoe Bentwood Box

The unique and treasured bentwood boxes of Northwest Coast First Nations peoples can be utilitarian or symbolic and may be used for storage, household items, transporting goods, cooking or as a burial box. Canoe boxes were designed for fishermen and hunters to neatly and securely store their gear in the bow of their canoes. The kerfing, or bending of thin, tight grained cedar planks requires meticulous notching, steaming and folding, with final touches of a tight fitting lid and finely carved and painted designs.
